In the 19th century, the Arab States arrived in the south of present-day Yemen under British influence. 1959 formed the eastern part of the Protectorate of South Arabia from, the western part of the Federation of Arab Emirates of the South, later the South Arabian Federation.

The British Protectorate of the South Arabian Federation explained together with the Protectorate of South Arabia on November 30, 1967 of its independence, and led the Democratic People's Republic of Yemen own tricolor, which showed a light blue triangle with a red star on the left side. The blue triangle departed from the usual pan-Arab colors in a unique Arab States Dimensions significantly.

The past of the tyrannical, colonial and feudal ruler symbolized the black stripe, white standing for peace and red for the revolution. The light blue triangle should represent the people, led by the National Liberation Front, the red star. This used a red-white- black tricolor, from which derived the national flag of South Yemen, but had even the same looking Arab Liberation flag 1952 as a model.
