Flashlight fish

Katoptron Anomalops

Called The planthopper ( Anomalopidae ), and lantern fish eyes or flashlight fish are a family of mucus -like head ( Beryciformes ). Flashlight fish live disjoint in different parts of the tropical oceans, mainly in the Indo-Pacific, Kryptophanaron alfredi in the Caribbean.

Features

The different types are five to 35 inches long. A characteristic feature of the fish is a bean-shaped light organ under the eyes, which can be down on and off by a black lid or by the turn away of the organ. The greenish light of the luminous organ is produced by living in the interior of the organ symbiotic bacteria. It is used to attract zooplankton. The fish make vertical migrations and hold at night to forage in shallower water, on moonless nights even at one meter depth.

Fins formula: Dorsal II-VI/14-19, Anal II-III/10-13, Ventral I/5-6

The hard - and weichstrahlige part of the dorsal fin are separated by a notch, except for Photoblepharon who has one continuous dorsal fin.
