Flavio Testi

Flavio Testi ( born January 4, 1923 in Florence, † January 14, 2014 ) was an Italian composer and musicologist.

Life

After private music lessons at the Conservatory and sufficient in Turin he went to Milan, where he continued his musical education self-taught. He also acquired in 1951 a degree in literature. He was a freelance composer and anxious note editions for major publishers, he also taught at the conservatories of Padua, Milan and Florence.

When his first composition came in 1954, the vocal work Crocifissione ( crucifixion ) for male chorus, strings, brass, timpani and three pianos in the symphonic concerts of La Scala premiered. Their great success opened the door once the doors of other Italian theaters and concert halls.

His symphonic works have been recorded regularly from the Stabat Mater to New York. Oficina y denuncia (after García Lorca), from Canto a las madres de los milicianos muertos ( by Pablo Neruda ) to the Cori di Santiago, of the four cantatas for chamber ensemble to Cielo for solo flute, from the works for a cappella choir for Jubilus for solo clarinet.

He also wrote four volumes of the history of Italian music and a book about the musical Paris in the early 20th century. He also translated among others works by Hans Werner Henze, Dmitri Shostakovich, Francis Poulenc and Prokofiev in Italian and was temporarily artistic director of the Teatro Comunale in Florence.

  • Saul, opera in three acts by André Gide, in concert Paris, Radio France, 2003 - scenic Macerata, Teatro Lauro Rossi, 2007
