The rural community Flói ( Isl Flóahreppur ) is an Icelandic community in the region Suðurland.

On 1 January 2009 the municipality had 596 inhabitants.

Geography

The municipality is bordered to the west Árborg and Ölfus, on the north by Grímsnes above Grafningur, on the northeast by Skeiða -og Gnúpverjahreppur, to the east by Ásahreppur and to the southeast by Rangárþing Ytra. The eastern boundary formed by the River Þjórsá, the northern border is the River Hvítá. To the south of the municipality is the North Atlantic.

In the southeast of the settlement Villingaholt is located on Villingaholtsvatn.

History

The municipality was formed in June 2006 by the merger of rural communities Hraungerði ( Hraungerðishreppur ) Villingaholt ( Villingaholtshreppur ) and Gaulverjabær ( Gaulverjabæjarhreppur, also Bæjarhreppur ). In the election of the new community name is Flóahreppur could prevail over the name proposals Flóabyggð, Flóamannahreppur and Flóasveit.
