Florence Ballard

Florence Glenda Ballard (* June 30, 1943 in Detroit, Michigan, † February 22, 1976 ibid ) was an American musician and founding member of the Supremes.

Life

Florence Ballard was ( according to other data in Rosetta, Mississippi) was born in 1943 in Detroit, Michigan as the eighth of thirteen children of Jesse and Lurlee Ballard.

In 1959 she was one of the founding members of the girl group The Primettes consisting of Diana Ross, Betty McGlown and Ballard's school friend Mary Wilson. McGlown was later replaced by Barbara Martin. The Primettes were a parallel foundation to The Primes, the later Temptations. 1961 signed the Primettes at the fledgling record company Motown and were renamed The Supremes.

After Motown to focus solely relied on Ross, what Ballard could not accept because she had founded the group, Gordy referred them in July 1967 further ado the group. Cindy Birdsong of Patti LaBelle And The Bluebelles now replaced Florence Ballard and the group was renamed Diana Ross & The Supremes.

After an unreleased solo album in 1968, she suffered from depression and alcoholism.

After the first comeback had failed, Florence Ballard died unexpectedly in February 1976, just 32 years from the consequences of thrombosis, before she could take her a few weeks upcoming second comeback. She left behind three children.
