Folio (typeface)

The Folio is a font that was designed in 1956 by Walter tree and Konrad Friedrich Bauer. The writing was available as a hand- set font and as matrices for line-casting machine set (inter- type). Folio was available at the H. Berthold AG for the photo set ( dc- writing disks, staromat type plates) and as a digital signature. Some sections of the digital fonts are now distributed by Adobe and Linotype.

The folio was created around the same time as the Helvetica (from 1957) and also belongs to the family of sans serif linear antiqua fonts. Font Historically revitalizes the Folio an older font, the width sans the Bauer foundry dating from before 1867.

After a good start in the 1960s, the Folio is now rarely in use. Although it has many similarities with Helvetica, it was not as successful. Of the large German company SAP only used since 2001 Folio - in a slight modification - in their corporate design.

  • According to DIN 16518 to categorize Folio in group IV Sans serif linear antiqua.
  • After Beinert Folio is a Senior Grotesque ( Neo - Grotesque ).
  • Hans Peter Willenberg would classify them in his classification matrix as static Grotesk.
