Fomivirsen is a 21-mer antisense RNA phosphorothioate oligonucleotide ( ISIS 2922 ) having a sequence complementary to the mRNA of the major immediate early ( MIE ) transcriptional unit of the human cytomegalovirus (CMV). The binding of the aRNA to the complementary mRNA, the translation of these viral mRNA is blocked and thus the gene expression of the proteins of the IE2 region (IE2 ), IE86 and IE55, prevented.
