History

The Football Association of Singapore derives its predecessor, the Singapore Amateur Footbal Association ( SAFA), which was incorporated on August 28, 1982, allegedly the oldest football association in Asia. In the postwar period, the FAS was trying to prevent what in 1975 led to a reorganization of the National Football League, under which more than 100 local soccer teams were whittled down to 30 teams bleeding of the local football league in favor of the Malaysia Cup. Despite the subsequent revitalization of the local football scene, the FAS in 1995 decided to withdraw from the Malaysia Cup and to focus on the newly formed S.League. This decision was made by the creation of two other football institutions - support - the National Football Academy and the Foreign Talent Scheme.
