Formula SAE

Formula SAE is an international design competition, compete in the student teams from around the world with self-designed and manufactured race cars against each other.

History

The Formula SAE was held for the first time in the U.S. in 1981. In 1999 the competition as Formula Student in England for the first time to Europe. Meanwhile, there are competitions around the world.

Rules

The regulations of the Formula Student is designed so that it allows the participating students a lot of freedom to create individual designs of their vehicles. However, emphasis is placed on safety, both in the design of vehicles, as well as on the competitions.

The main features that must be in a Formula Student car:

  • Monoposto ( single seater open-wheel )
  • Gasoline four-stroke engine with a maximum of 610 cm ³ and 20 mm Luftmassenbegrenzer ( "air restrictor " )
  • Wheelbase of at least 1525 mm

The competition language is usually only English, only in Italy and Brazil, the national language is also allowed.

Disciplines

Since this is a design competition and not a pure race, there is not only dynamic disciplines where the car drives, but also so-called static disciplines. A maximum of 1000 points can be reached.

Venues

There are now eight official world competitions. Two in the U.S. and one each in England, Australia, Japan, Brazil, Italy and Germany. In addition, as the FS Austria are increasingly establishing themselves professionally organized not official contests.
