Fort São Sebastião

The Fortress São Sebastião is located at the northern tip of the island of Ilha de Moçambique in Mozambique and the oldest preserved in the original form of fortress in Africa south of the Sahara.

The Portuguese began under Afonso de Albuquerque in 1508 with the construction of the " Fortress of Saint Sebastian". According to other data, the present fortress was built in 1558-1620. Later, the fort withstood attacks of the Arab Omani and Dutch in the 17th, the British in the 18th and the French in the early 19th century. Within the fort are still cannons from the early 19th century, a church, a historic Hospital and drinking water cisterns.
