Fortana

Fortana is an indigenous red grape variety from Italy. Was mentioned in writing their cultivation for the first time in the 17th century in the province of Ferrara in Emilia Romagna. Their cultivation is in the provinces of Cremona, Mantua and Sondrio Lombardy Region and the provinces of Bologna, Ferrara, Ravenna, Parma and the Emilia Romagna region is recommended. Admitted she is also in the provinces of Modena, Piacenza and Reggio Emilia. Currently about 2,180 hectares are planted with the variety Fortana in Italy. The very late maturing variety is moderately strong growth and gives very good yields. It is hardly susceptible to vine diseases and can thus hold in the moist climate of the Po Valley. The juice gives very rustic, tart red wines with strong tannins. The wines find their way into the DOC wine Bosco Eliceo.

Erroneously, the variety Fortana was confused with the variety raboso Veronese, with which it is not identical. Supposedly it comes from the Côte d'Or in Burgundy, whereupon the synonyms Costa d' Oro, Uva d' Oro and Uva Nera Francese point. You should initially by Renate of France ( * 1510, † 1575), daughter of the French King Louis XII. and wife of Duke Ercole II d' Este, imported into the Duchy of Este family and have been grown in the vicinity of the Castle of Mesola there next to the existing extensive holm oak forest ( Bosco Eliceo ).
