Fortune Playhouse

The Fortune Theatre was a theater in London. There was 1600-1642 and must not be confused with the 1924 opened in London's West End theater of the same name.

History

The Fortune Theatre was built in 1599 by Edward Alleyn and Philip Henslowe north of the London city limits. From 1600 to 1621 here acted Alleyns troupe The Admiral's Men, later renamed Prince Henry 's Men Elector Palatine 's or Men who were the main rivals of the theater group, the Lord Chamberlain's Men.

Although the stage was similar to that of the Globe Theatre, the outer shape of the house but was square instead of round in contrast to all other public venues. The contract for the construction of the theater is an essential source of information about the size, design and seating capacity of the stages of the Elizabethan theater. On December 9, 1621 Fortune Theatre burned down. It was reopened in March 1623, closed in 1642 and demolished in 1649.
