History

The Place

The Domshof with the Bremen Cathedral is next to Bremen Market Square, a central place in Bremen. The place served in the 18th century as a gathering place. In the 19th century three - and four-storey residential and commercial buildings as well as restaurants and hotels here were mostly settled. On the north side of 38 x 114 meters large square stood from 1899 Teichmann Fountain, which is a boat with Mercury, Neptune and mermaids in bronze, designed by the sculptor Rudolf Maison. Stifter was the Bremen merchant Gustav Adolph Teichmann. The fountain fell because of its exaggerated realism in criticism. The cathedral wished in 1904 even demolition. In 1940 he was melted down as " metal donation of the German people."

Dombaumeister Max Salzmann suggested around 1898 /99 that the fountain trees should be planted. 1914 suggested landscape architect Rudolf Bergfeld, here to arrange a large group of trees, connected with two double rows of trees on the west and east sides of the Domshof. It was not until 1922, the gravelled space its trees and 1925, the center of the square a piece of the mosaic ceiling. Under the Domshof in 1940 - with the loss of the trees and the fountain - a bomb shelter built, who was the underground parking for the postwar period already created. Entry and exit are just outside the site of the present Domforums. After the war, this condition remained for a long time.

The Domshof received its present appearance in 1990 with granite paving, some trees and raised beds and sandstone slabs on the sidewalks. An outline of the large area between the farmer's market or the assembly area to the south and the road Schüsselkorb / Violenstraße with tram and car traffic was - as used to be the former group of trees - sought.

The Domshof forum

After a relocation of the tram in 1999 was finally the Domshof forum. According to plans of architect Joachim Schürmann a very high, almost straight glass roof over this part was placed on eight round, 16 -meter-high steel columns. Through delicate rope design on the glass roof of the 1000 m² roof is supported. How stacked, oversized glass container works including the three-story building, which occupies about one-third of the area of Domshof Forum, which has around 700 m² of floor space for 150 seats. The Domshofcafé is made of glass, steel, white square wall elements and white sunshade awnings. The roof area with two smaller parts of the building serves as a further outer zone with extensive views of the Domshof. The Bistro - Café Alex is the operator of the building.
