Fosco Maraini

Fosco Maraini (* November 15, 1912 in Florence, † June 8, 2004 ) was an Italian anthropologist, ethnologist, writer and photographer.

Biography

As a photographer, Maraini was primarily known for his activities in Tibet and Japan. His recordings of the Ainu people in Hokkaido are considered as historical documentation of a primitive culture. For his creative work, he received a recognition of the Photographic Society of Japan in 2002. The latter also recognized Marainis years of efforts to promote relations between Japan and Italy. Maraini also photographed in the Karakoram, the Hindu Kush, in Southeast Asia and southern Italy. As an anthropologist and ethnologist, he is famous in particular for his two trips to the Tibetologist Giuseppe Tucci in 1937 and 1948. As a climber, he is known for his expeditions in the Himalayas.
