Fragaria × Comarum hybrids

The ornamental strawberry is an addition bastard of the Garden strawberry ( Fragaria × ananassa = Fragaria chiloensis Fragaria virginiana x ) and the Marsh Cinquefoil ( Potentilla palustris). So there are species from two genera involved in the intersection: eight of their ten sets of chromosomes come from the already polyploid strawberry and two from the Marsh Cinquefoil. The ornamental strawberry is very similar to the strawberry and bears edible fruit, but has pink flowers. Because of their breeding more emphasis was placed on decorative flowers as on the fruit yield, it must be regarded as an ornamental plant.
