Frances D'Souza, Baroness D'Souza

Frances Gertrude Claire D' Souza, Baroness D' Souza, CMG, PC ( born April 18, 1944) is a British scientist and politician. Since September 2011 she is Lord Speaker of the House of Lords.

Life

Frances D' Souza was born as Frances Gertrude Claire Russell, the daughter of Robert Anthony Gilbert Russell and his wife Pauline Russell (nee Parmet ). My father came from Ardingly in Sussex.

She attended St Mary 's School in Princethorpe in Warwickshire. She studied anthropology at University College London; where she earned a 1970 Bachelor of Science BSc. Further studies she undertook at Lady Margaret Hall College, University of Oxford, where she received a doctorate in 1976 as a Doctor of Philosophy ( D.Phil. ) In the subject " Evolutionary Models " (Evolutionary Models ).

D' Souza worked since 1973 as a researcher and university teacher. From 1973 to 1977 she was at the Nuffield Institute of Comparative Medicine, where she "Comparative Physiology" research as a Research Associate (Research Fellow ) from the Ford Foundation in the tray. From 1974 to 1980 she held a teaching position ( Part-Time Lecturer ) at the London School of Economics. From 1977 to 1980 she taught as Associate Professor ( Senior Lecturer ) at the Faculty of Humanities at Oxford Polytechnic, now Oxford Brookes University.

From 1977 to 1985 she worked at the Relief and Development Institute. She was there and founding director from 1983 to 1985 Head of the Research Department.

From 1985 to 1988 she worked as a freelance consultant and researcher for the United Nations, for the Save the Children Fund and the Ford Foundation. From 1988 to 1989 she was responsible for the government of the United Kingdom as a researcher at the Overseas Development Administration (now the Department for International Development ) operates. 1988/1989 she was Executive Director ( Executive Director) of Article 19, a human rights organization.

From 2003 to 2004 she was Director (Director) of the British human rights organization Redress (The Redress Trust ); 2004 to 2006 she worked as a researcher and consultant then continue for Redress.

Membership in the House of Lords

On 1 July 2004, she was appointed Life Peer. It bears the title Baroness D' Souza of Wychwood in the County of Oxfordshire. Your inauguration, she held on 24 November 2004. They sit in the House of Lords as a cross Bencher.

D' Souza was in the House of Lords member of various committees and sub-committees, including the Procedure Committee (2005-2007) and in the EU Sub-Committee F ( Home Affairs ) ( 2005-2007), which proposals from the European Union in relation to the British domestic politics checked for compliance and implementation into national law. Furthermore, it was from 2007 to 2011 member of the following committees: Administration & Works Committee, House Committee, Liaison Committee and Privileges & Conduct Committee.

From 2007 to 2011 she was the speaker and chairman ( convener ) of the Cross Bench peers. In July 2011 she was elected Lord Speaker of the House of Lords. In a runoff election, she won with 296:285 votes against Anthony Hamilton -Smith, 3rd Baron Colwyn. She entered on September 1, 2011 official succeeds Helene Hayman, Baroness Hayman. Your first session as Lord Speaker headed D' Souza on September 5, 2011.

D' Souza is since 2011 President (President) of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (UK Branch) and Honorary President ( Hon. President) of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (British Group).

1998 D' Souza was appointed Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George; In 2009 she became a member of the Privy Council.

Private

D' Souza married in 1959 the Portuguese physician Dr. Stanislaus ( Stanley ) D' Souza. From this marriage two children were born, two daughters. The marriage was divorced in 1974. From 1985 to 1994, D'Souza was married in second marriage with Martin John Griffiths. In 2003, she re-married her first husband.

Her hobbies include D'Souza music, especially opera, string quartets, jazz and flamenco, and hiking.
