Francesco Antonio Zaccaria

Francesco Antonio Zaccaria (* March 27 1714 in Venice, † October 10, 1795 in Rome ) was an Italian Jesuit priest, theologian, church historian, literary historian and linguist.

Life and work

Zaccaria joined in 1731 the Society of Jesus, teaching in Gorizia, was ordained in Rome in 1740 as a priest and served in Ancona, Fermo and Pistoia. In 1751 he took over the succession of Ludovico Antonio Muratori as head of the library of the house of Este in Modena. In 1768 he went to the Jesuit library in Rome. Pope Pius VI. he was appointed Professor of Church History at the University La Sapienza and at the Accademia dei Nobili Ecclesiastici ( Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy ). He belonged to several Italian academies. In addition to theological, church historical, archaeological and polemical writings he published in literary work, especially a copy of Dante's Divina Comedia (Verona 1749). He was co-editor of the influential journal Storia d' Italia letteraria (1st 1750 - 14th 1759)
