Francesco Rasi

Francesco Rasi ( born May 14, 1574 Arezzo ();? † November 30, 1621 ) was an Italian singer (tenor ), instrumentalist ( chitarrone ), composer and poet. In contemporary sources he is called after his birthplace as " nobile d' Arezzo ", he was not allowed to set foot in the city after his conviction.

Life

Francesco Rasi, son of a Tuscan court officials, stood from 1588 on the payroll of the Florentine court. During this time he received singing lessons from Giulio Caccini. 1594, he came, perhaps in the wake of Carlo Gesualdo, whose marriage to Ferrara. 1598, he came to the court of Duke Vincenzo I Gonzaga in Mantua, in whose service he remained until his death. With Vincenzo, he traveled throughout Italy and some European countries, under conductor Luca Marenzio, he worked for two years in the court orchestra of the Polish king Sigismund III .. He was the singer in the world premieres of Jacopo Peri's Euridice ( Aminta ) and Giulio Caccini's Il rapimento di Cefalo (1600).

In 1607 he was the first in the eponymous opera Orfeo by Claudio Monteverdi. In 1608 he appeared in the world premiere of Marco da Gagliano Dafne.

1610 Rasi has been convicted for the attempted murder of his step- mother and the murder of the bailiff to death. However, under the protection of the Gonzaga family, he managed to escape. With Prince Vincenzo he traveled in 1612 to the court at Prague, where he was rewarded for an appearance before Emperor Matthias, of this with a gold chain of honor. On the way back he came over Nuremberg and Augsburg to Salzburg to the court of Archbishop Markus Sittikus, which he " da camera e da chiesa Musice " dedicated the manuscript of his. Rasi came here probably as Orfeo on in the eponymous opera by Claudio Monteverdi. Later, the death sentence was abolished under the premise that he was not allowed to enter his native Arezzo.

Rasi composed the ( lost ) Pastoral Cybele, ed Ati, which was probably never performed during his lifetime. In addition, he also wrote a libretto Elvidia rapita. He has published numerous poems, including the anthology La cetra di sette corde. As a composer predominates in him solo aria ( monody ), written in modern, ie monodic style Caccini, which are included in anthologies such as Vaghezze di musica ( 1608) and Madrigali (1610 ). Almost all monodies are for tenor voice, so probably written for in itself.
