Francis Arinze

Francis Cardinal Arinze ( born 1 November 1932 in Eziowelle, Nigeria ) was Archbishop of Onitsha and is an emeritus Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church.

Life

Francis Arinze became his secondary education at a religious seminary and studied Catholic theology and philosophy in Nigeria and Rome, where he the sacrament of ordination by Cardinal Grégoire -Pierre Agagianian, Patriarch of Cilicia received in 1958. After his return to Nigeria, he taught liturgy and philosophy at the seminary in Enugu. Further studies led him to London, where he obtained a diploma in education.

In 1965 he was called by Pope Paul VI. appointed Titular Archbishop of Fissiana and Koadjutorerzbischof of the Archdiocese of Onitsha ordered, from 1967 Archbishop of Onitsha. The episcopal consecration on August 29, 1965 He received his his predecessor Archbishop Charles Heerey.

From 1979 to 1984 Arinze led the Nigerian bishops' conference before him, Pope John Paul II in 1985 as President of the Secretariat for Non-Christians, which was in 1988 renamed the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue, appointed and as cardinal deacon with the title Diakonia San Giovanni della Pigna recorded in the College of Cardinals. He was appointed while retaining its title Diakonia per hac vice cardinal priest in 1996.

From 2002 to 2008 headed Cardinal Arinze as Prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments. On 25 April 2005 he was beatified by Benedict XVI. appointed Cardinal Bishop of Velletri - Segni and thus its successor as title holder of this suburbicarian diocese.
