Francis Joyon

Francis Joyon ( born May 28, 1956 in Hanches, Eure -et -Loir, France ) is a French offshore racing and record sailors. In 2004, he orbited the first solo sailors the world on a multihull, trimaran Idec, and put it one-handed speed records. Four years later he won with an even faster single-handed on the same boat again world records.

Joyon has repeatedly participated ocean races and won, among others, the well-known single-handed transatlantic race OSTAR in 2000, and the Fastnet Race 2001.

In 2008, Joyon was voile from the French Sailing Federation, the Fédération Française de, for Sailor of the Year ( marin de l' année ) appointed.

Life

Joyon learned to sail when he helped a 18 -year-old volunteer in the maintenance of boats and other material of the French sailing school Les Glénans. He subsequently studied with other sailing schools and eventually gained access to ocean racing. When he, lying in the harbor of La Trinité- sur -Mer in the often larger boats of ocean-going vessels, two disused found floating body of the catamaran Elf Aquitaine, he used them to build his own boat.

When the professionalization of ocean racing grew and demanded that the sailors more and more marketing to Joyon was looking for its own account a niche in order to continue (only ) to provide for the sailing in the foreground, even if he then get less money from sponsors. In 1996, Joyon in the well-known single-handed transatlantic race OSTAR ( The Europe 1 STAR ) yet with a lead of 24 hours until his trimaran Banque Populaire capsized off Nova Scotia. Joyon won the next edition of the regatta (The Europe 1 New Man STAR ), in 2000. Followed a year later, the victory in the Fastnet Race 2001.

In the following years, Joyon especially the single-handed sailing record turned to on maxi trimarans. ( Ex - designed Sport Elec, for six to seven people) On Idec, he circumnavigated the world in 2004 in 72 days, setting a new record ( see below). When Ellen MacArthur undercutting the time the following year, again in 2008 Joyon sailed around the world alone and decreased the single-handed best time to less than 58 days.

  • 2009: L' Odyssée the épices (French for " Odyssey of spices ", named after the spice trade during the French colonies in Asia) between the French island of Mauritius and Groix: 26 days 4 hrs 13 min 29 sec ( first reference time ever)
  • Single-handed circumnavigation of the globe: 57 days 13 hrs 34 min 6 sec
  • Single-handed North Atlantic crossing in east-west direction ( Ruta del Descubrimiento: Cadiz / Spain to San Salvador / Dominican Republic): 9 days 20 hrs 35 min 3 sec
