Francis Sejersted

Francis Sejersted ( born February 8, 1936) is a Norwegian historian and since 1973 professor of social and economic history at the University of Oslo.

Sejersted was in charge from 1982 to 1999 a member of the Norwegian Nobel Committee since 1990 as Chairman, and therefore for the award of the Nobel Peace Prize. He was from 1990 to 1999 and member of the board of the Nobel Foundation in Stockholm.

He was editor of the Historisk Tidsskrift 1971-1975, and since 1984 co-editor of the Nytt Norsk Tidsskrift.

Sejersted is a member of the Norwegian Academy of Sciences (since 1976), the Norwegian Academy for Language and Literature (since 1985), the Academia Europaea (since 1989), the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences (since 1993 ), the Technical Norwegian Academy of Sciences (since 1995), the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences ( since 1997) and the Kongelige Norske Videnskabers Selskab ( since 2001).

He joined the Conservative Party ( Høyre ) and is considered an important value- conservative thinker Norway. Since 2000 he has been CEO of Fritt Ord Foundation From 1996 to 1999 he was chairman of the Norwegian Parliamentary Commission for the freedom of expression.

Sejersted is Commander of the Order of St. Olav and winner of the Dannebrogordens and the North Star Order.
