Francis William Reitz

Francis William Reitz ( born October 5, 1844 in Swellendam, † March 27, 1934 in Cape Town) was a politician and lawyer in South Africa today.

Life

After studying in the UK in 1868 he returned to South Africa to dig for diamonds there. Since he was unsuccessful, he returned to the legal profession and in 1872 elected to the Parliament of the Cape Province.

Two years later he was appointed at the request of President Jan Brand as Chairman of the Court of Appeals to Bloemfontein, shortly thereafter as chief judge of the Orange Free State. This position kept Reitz for 13 years.

From 1889 to 1895 he was president of the Orange Free State. During the Second Boer War he was Secretary of State ( Foreign Affairs) of the South African Republic.
