Francisco Bayeu y Subías

Francisco Bayeu y Subías ( born March 9, 1734 Zaragoza, † August 4, 1795 in Madrid) was a Spanish painter of classicism.

He studied with José Antonio González Velázquez and Luzán. In Madrid, he won a scholarship to attend the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando. After the death of his parents he returned to Zaragoza back in order to take care of his brothers until he was brought back by Anton Raphael Mengs to the design of the Royal Palace in Madrid. He was court painter to Charles III in 1767. , 1765 Professor at the Academy in 1788 and its director.

He painted not only in different palaces and church facilities in Madrid and Zaragoza, but also in the monastery of the Cathedral of Toledo and worked for the Royal Tapestry Factory.

Francisco de Goya was his brother in law - he married his sister, Josefa.

His brothers Ramón Bayeu (1746-1793) and Manuel Bayeu were also painters.
