Francisco de Paula Rodrigues Alves

Francisco de Paula Rodrigues Alves ( * July 7, 1848 in Guaratinguetá, São Paulo, † January 16, 1919 in Rio de Janeiro, Rio de Janeiro ) is a Brazilian politician and 15 November 1902 was to 15 November 1906, the fifth president of Brazil.

Life

His public career began in 1866 in his hometown. In 1870 he graduated as a lawyer at the Law Faculty of the Universidade de São Paulo in São Paulo and then became a prosecutor. 19 November 1887 to 27 April 1888 he was Governor of the State of São Paulo. After the proclamation of the Republic, he was a member of the Constituent Assembly. From 1 May 1900 until 13 February 1902 he was again governor of the state of São Paulo and came back for the Brazilian presidency. In the presidential elections in Brazil in 1902, he was elected by a large majority. During his presidency, Rio de Janeiro was extensively remodeled. In 1918 he was re-elected President, but died before taking office of the Spanish flu, so that his vice president Delfim Moreira was President of Brazil.
