Francisco de Sánchez de la Barreda

Francisco de Sánchez de la Barreda y Vera (* before 1711, † 1738) was a Spanish lawyer, who officiated as interim 1733/1734 as governor of Chile.

Prior to his time in Chile, he was probably working in Lima, at least arrived there in 1711, his son Domingo to the world, he had to Isabel de Espinosa.

Sánchez was since February 1, 1712 Judge (Spanish: Oidor Decano ) at the Real Audiencia of Chile in Santiago de Chile, as on November 11, 1733 Governor Gabriel Cano de Aponte died. That same evening, the judges of the Audiencia came together and realized that no disposition of the Viceroy on a provisional successor was present.

The next morning they told Sánchez as a senior judge in accordance with the provisions of the Leyes de India for the temporary governor. The city council (Spanish: cabildo ) welcomed this decision and asked to confirm in office until the actual successor Bruno Mauricio de Zavala from Buenos Aires had arrived the viceroy in Lima, Sánchez.

Sánchez was considered experienced, moderate and deeply religious man. After the earthquake of July 8, 1730 he had his house that the few had been spared destruction as one, provided the Augustinian nuns available.

"The government of the judge Barreda was as short as insignificant ," said the judgment of the historian Diego Barros Arana. In the vicinity of Valdivia, a Dutch ship was sighted, which should be prevented by an intervention force of 200 men at the landing to avoid hostilities or illicit trade. Before the arrival of the troops, however, the Dutch were moved on again.

In January 1734 the news of the death of the governor Cano de Aponte had reached the court of the viceroy. Viceroy José de Armendáriz confirmed by deed of January 29, 1734 all decisions and personal with the exception of the governor. Instead of Sánchez Barreda, the viceroy appointed the nephew of the late governor, the cavalry officer Manuel de Salamanca for governor, this received the news of his appointment on 9 March, and met on the evening of May 5, 1734 in Santiago, where he died on following day solemnly took office.
