Francisco Maturana

Francisco Maturana (* February 15, 1949 in Quibdó, Chocó ) is a former Colombian football player and current coach.

Maturana is a trained dentist. From 1970 to 1982 he worked in various Colombian football clubs and in the Colombian national team as a defender and was with his club Atletico Nacional from his hometown Medellin twice national champion (1973 and 1976).

Since 1983, Maturana trainer and professional coach since 1986. In the period 1987-1995 Maturana was national coach of his native country and remained club coach next to it.

In 1989, Maturana won with Atlético Nacional in the Copa Libertadores. In the subsequent final of the World Cup his team AC Milan defeated Arrigo Sacchi under after extra time.

With the national team he reached 1990 for the first time in 28 years, the finals of the football World Cup. In this World Cup, the team came first in the second round (see World Cup 1990/Kolumbien ).

In 1992, Maturana to América de Cali. With América de Cali Maturana 1992 national champion. Then he was in 1994 briefly worked for Atlético Madrid. In 1995, the Ecuadorian national football team, with whom he performed in the Copa América in 1995 and qualifying for the 1998 World Cup. Although the latter was ultimately unsuccessful, however, Ecuador was the first defeat in a qualifying match Argentina. Then ended his contract and he moved to the Colombian club Millonarios team, which he only briefly, because unsuccessful trained. He was national coach of Costa Rica in 1999, but soon moved to the Peruvian national team, with him, however, to qualify for the World Cup in 2000 did not succeed. In 2001 he was again coach of Colombia and trained his team in the Copa America 2001 in their own country. Colombia was the first time to decide for the South American Championship.

He then coached Al -Hilal. In 2003 he was again coach of his native country and played with this the Confederations Cup 2003 ( 4th place), the CONCACAF Gold Cup 2003 ( quarter-final defeat against Brazil) and the start of qualifying for the 2006 World Cup. After defeats to Brazil, Bolivia and Venezuela was his contract terminated prematurely. In 2004, he was manager of CA Colon in Argentina, in 2007, he coached just there Gimnasia y Esgrima de La Plata. In 2008, he became coach of the national team of Trinidad and Tobago was, however, released in April 2009.

Last Maturana was offered the opportunity to train Independiente Medellin. He declined, however, as he is currently a member of the FIFA Technical and Development Committee.
