Francisco Moreno

Perito Moreno, actually Francisco Pascasio Moreno ( born May 31, 1852 in Buenos Aires, † November 22, 1919 in Buenos Aires ) was an Argentine geographer, anthropologist and explorer. In many expeditions he explored especially Patagonia and its flora and fauna.

In 1872 he was one of the founders of the Sociedad Científica Argentina.

In 1882 the newly founded capital city of La Plata, Buenos Aires province, he was in 1885 the first director of the La Plata Museum.

" Perito " in Spanish means " expert", an official title, which he received in 1902 with the title Perito de la Comision de Limites during the boundary survey of Chile and Argentina. The definition of the border between Argentina and Chile in the Andes was under British mediation. These Moreno was with different companions in use, so with Emilio Frey, Clemente Onelli and Santiago Roth and the British referee Sir Thomas Holdich. With the win on his expeditions property and local knowledge Moreno could significantly affect the demarcation within the meaning of Argentina. For example, he was able to prove that various glacial lakes, particularly Lake Lácar, despite drains into the Pacific Ocean to the catchment area of the Atlantic (and thus to Argentina under the border treaty of 1881) are, as their natural drains are only blocked by moraines.

Moreno was also politically active. In 1910 he became the national member of parliament in 1912 and Vice President of the National Education Council. Moreno founded in the southern part of Buenos Aires a school for children from poor families, which was expanded to Bernasconi Institute later with the help of the Swiss immigrant Felix Bernasconi and the Argentine State. Moreno was involved as co-founder of the Scout Movement in Argentina and in 1912 president whose national organization.

His last trip to Patagonia, he undertook in 1912 as a companion of the U.S. ex-President Theodore Roosevelt.
