Francisco Palau

Francisco Palau y Quer ( born December 29, 1811 in Aitona, Lleida, † March 20, 1872 in Tarragona) was a Spanish Carmelite and priest who was beatified by the Catholic Church.

Life

Francisco Palau y Quer entered with 17 years in the seminary of Lerida. After three years of philosophy and theology studies one years he left the seminary to enter as a novice at the Discalced Carmelites in the Teresian Carmel in Barcelona in 1832. On November 14, 1832, he took the religious name for the garment Francisco de Jesús, María, y José. Because of the persecutions of the Church during the First Carlistenkrieges, he could not lead a more monastic life. On April 2, 1836 he was ordained a priest. After the Carlist War, he moved to France, where he remained eleven years. There he began his literary activity. Back in Spain, he was Spiritual Director of the Seminary of Barcelona. In 1851 he founded with the help of the Archbishop of Barcelona, ​​José Domingo Costa y Borrás, the Escuela de la virtud (German: School of Virtue), a catechesis of adults. In 1854, Francisco Palau y Quer was banished by the Liberal government and the catechism school is closed. Six years he lived in almost complete isolation in the Balearic Islands, and devoted himself - also a writer - of mysticism. He returned to the mainland in 1860 and devoted himself to the People's Mission in Spanish cities such as Madrid, Barcelona and others. From his general priors, he was familiar with the care of the Third Order. In the Balearic Islands, he founded a Congregation of Carmelite Tertiaries. He later founded the Carmelo Misionario (English about: Missionary Carmel ) for the People's mission. In 1868 he founded and directed the magazine El Ermitaño ( Eng.: The Hermit ). During the First Vatican Council, he was in Rome to maintain contacts with the Council Fathers and write reports for his magazine. He died in Tarragona during a mission trip.

Francisco Palau y Quer was beatified by Pope John Paul II on 24 April 1988. His feast day in the liturgy is the 7th of November.
