Francisco Zúñiga

Francisco Zúñiga Chavarria (* December 27, 1912 in Guadalupe in San José; † August 9, 1998 in Tlalpan ) was a Costa Rican - Mexican painter and sculptor.

Biography

Zúñiga, son of the religious painter and sculptor Manuel Zúñiga Rodríguez in 1927 enrolled at the Art School of San Jose, where he received drawing lessons for a short time. In the period 1928-1934 he worked as an assistant in the family sculptor operating for religious sculptures.

Impressed by the scenery of Mexico, he immigrated in 1936 at the age of 24 years out there. He studied there until 1938 when Rodríguez Lozano design and Oliverio Martínez sculpture. Immediately thereafter, he became professor of sculpture at the Academy of Art La Esmeralda in Mexico City. Particularly fond he was of sculptures of monumental figure. His work influenced the change in the Mexican sculpture this time with much. In 1943 he was, together with Pedro Coronel, Alberto de la Vega and Manuel Felguérez member of the free sculpture workshop " Taller Libre de Escultura " and from 1946 he worked as a freelance artist and the official representative for the memorial at the dam of the Valsequillo in Puebla.

In 1987 he became a member of the Academia de Artes.
