François Pollen

François Louis Paul pollen ( born January 8, 1842 in Rotterdam, † May 7, 1886 in The Hague) was a naturalist and merchant. Despite his French first name he was Dutch. He made ​​a major contribution to the study of the Malagasy fauna.

Life and work

Pollen was one of five children of pollen MP (1806-1857), the owner of the distillery MPPollen & Zoon in Rotterdam. In 1862 he came to Leiden to study medicine. However, Hermann Schlegel encouraged him to a zoology degree. From November 1863 to July 1866, he traveled with Casparus Douwe van Dam ( 1827-1898 ) to Madagascar, where they collected insects, fish, birds and mammals for the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke History in Leiden. Thanks to its wealth paid pollen expedition from his own pocket. Later he financed the field work of other researchers in Madagascar, without being involved locally. He also worked as animal and plant collector in the Comoros and Réunion to the Maskareneninsel. 1875 pollen received an honorary doctorate from the Georg-August -Universität Göttingen. Together with Hermann Schlegel described pollen 1866 Flughundart Eidolon dupreanum of the island of Madagascar. In the same year he wrote the first scientific description of the Newton crawler catcher ( Coracina newtoni ) and 1868 he described together with the Schlegel Vangawürger genus Newtonia.

Dedikationsnamen

After pollen among other Komorentaube (Columba pollenii ), the pollen - Vanga ( Xenopirostris polleni ) are named the chameleon Furcifer polleni and Skinkart Madascincus polleni.
