Frank Hsieh

Frank Hsieh Chang- ting (Chinese谢长廷, Pinyin Xie Chángtíng, W.-G. Hsieh Ch'ang T'ing, PEH oē - jī SIA Tiông-têng/Chiā Tiong - teng ) ( born May 18, 1946 in Dadaocheng, Datong District, Taipei) is a Taiwanese politician and was on 1 February 2005 to 25 January 2006 Prime Minister of the Republic of China on Taiwan under President Chen Shui -bian.

Life

He studied law at the National Taiwan University and the University of Kyoto. He then practiced as a lawyer from 1969 to 1981. Among other things, he was the defense lawyer in the military process after the Kaohsiung Incident (or Formosa Incident ) of December 1979. From 1981 to 1988 he belonged to the city council of the city of Taipei, and from 1989 to 1995 the Parliament of the Republic of China, the Legislative yuan. In the election campaign of the presidential candidate of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP ), Peng Ming -min, a candidate Hsieh 1996 for the office of Vice-President. The candidates of the DPP at that time received only 21.1 % of the vote against the Kuomintang. In December 1998 he was elected mayor of Kaohsiung City and re-elected in 2002.

Hsieh was involved in the founding of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP ) on 28 September 1986. The party's name goes back to his proposal. From April to May 2000, he had briefly held the party chairmanship, which he took over again from January to May 2008, after Chen Shui -bian had resigned after the defeat in the elections to the Legislative Yuan.

After his resignation as Prime Minister in 2006, he spent a few months in the USA " to rest ". He returned to Taiwan in order to run in December 2006 as mayor of Taipei, was defeated in the election, however, to Hau Lung -pin of the Kuomintang.

After an internal party election Hsieh has been appointed in May 2007, the DPP candidate for the 2008 presidential election, which he won with 41.55 % of the vote against the candidate Ma Ying-jeou of the Kuomintang. After the election defeat said Hsieh, wanting to withdraw completely from politics.

Hsieh is married to Hsieh Yu Fang -chih (游 芳枝) and the couple have a son and a daughter.
