Frank Lloyd

Frank Lloyd ( born February 2, 1886 in Glasgow, Scotland; † August 10, 1960 in Santa Monica, California ) was a British- American actor, director and producer.

He was one of 36 founding members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

Life

As the son of a singer Lloyd he soon came into contact with show business in 1910 and moved to Canada, where he went on tour with a theater group. 1913 took him Carl Laemmle for Universal Pictures under contract and gave him his first roles in short silent films. Just a year later he made ​​his first short film as a director for the Nestor Film Company. By 1915, he directed 25 films. His biggest success was commercially until then flowers of the North, by which he aroused the interest of competing film studios.

In 1916 he joined William Fox, where he directed mainly with literary adaptations such as Les Miserables and Oliver Twist from 1921 to 1922. The adaptation of Black Oxen brought 1923 Corinne Griffith brought the biggest success of her career. For his film The uncrowned queen, also with Corinne Griffith, he was awarded in April 1930 his first Oscar for Best Director. In the same year he was nominated in the same category for two more films.

Unlike many other directors Lloyd had no problems with the transition to talkies. For Cavalcade, the screen adaptation of the play by Noel Coward, in 1934 he received his second Oscar for Best Director. His last Oscar nomination was the director two years later for the adventure film Mutiny on the Bounty with Charles Laughton and Clark Gable in the lead roles. Mid -1930s, he worked primarily as a film producer for Fox, Paramount and Universal. During this time he produced, among others, the Hitchcock film saboteurs.

In 1945 he retired from the film business, but returned in 1954 out of retirement to take over the director of the thriller Hotel Shanghai and western Barricades of San Antonee.

For his contributions to the film, he received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
