Sibley is one of the most important representatives of the linguistic analysis aesthetics, which he sustained impressed with his distinction between aesthetic and non - aesthetic terms. Although he left no major work on aesthetics. Especially his two essays Aesthetic Concepts (1959 and 1962) and Aesthetic and Non- aesthetic (1965 ) but are fundamental to the modern debates within the aesthetics and discussed diverse and controversial to this day.

Sibley studied under Gilbert Ryle and JL Austin Philosophy at University College, Oxford. From 1949 to 1964 he taught at various universities in the USA. From 1964 until his retirement (1985 ) he taught at the University of Lancaster in the UK.

Aesthetics

Aesthetic terms

With his essay Aesthetic Concepts Sibley caused a reversal of philosophical aesthetics for speech analysis. He tries is to answer the question of the specific aesthetic by a significance analysis of those terms with which we ascribe aesthetic properties of works of art.

Sibley distinguishes between aesthetic and non - aesthetic terms. Non- aesthetic terms we use, for example, if we say about a painting that with him pale colors were used. But if we say of him, that it radiates a certain serenity and tranquility, so we use aesthetic terms. While we to use non- aesthetic terms correctly need to only have a normal capacity of sensory perception, we need for the proper use of aesthetic concepts also the assets of taste.

Although aesthetic concepts also have a descriptive content for Sibley and therefore may differ from non- aesthetic terms, to a certain degree, but will never fully explicated. So we can, for example, and explain in colors the aesthetic term " tender " by non- aesthetic terms such as " Pastel " " low contrast ", but not the difference between the aesthetic concept of " soft " and "fad " because both terms are very similar in terms of their descriptive content. We can only give negative descriptive predicates that are incompatible with certain aesthetic properties (eg pastel color images can not the aesthetic quality " garish " have ).

Aesthetic objects

In Aesthetic and Non- aesthetic Sibley argues that philosophical aesthetics has a specific kind of perception on the subject. Its subject matter are not physical, but phenomenal objects. The aesthetic properties of a work of art are emergent with respect to its non- aesthetic properties; they depend on its non- aesthetic properties and are determined by this.
