Frankfurt City Tunnel

The City Tunnel Frankfurt is a central component of the S- Bahn Rhein -Main. Through it runs a standard gauge, electrified railway line, which connects the Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof to Frankfurt South Station and Frankfurt- Oberrad ( in the direction of City Tunnel Offenbach).

The route runs underground along its entire length and is divided into two südmainisch route branches. The length of the original (western) tunnel is 4728 m, the eastern tunnel section of the later addition 1633 m ( called a tunnel Frankfurt- mill mountain ).

History

Central Station to Konstablerwache

In the light of growing urban transport problems in Frankfurt, the idea of an inner city rail link has been revived despite the lack of financial profitability in the 1960s. 1964 included the city and the Bundesbahndirektion Frankfurt an agreement on the planning, operational and traffic- cooperation for passenger transport in and around the city. In June 1966, the preliminary draft of the junction line was presented to the Minister of Transport for technical approval. Initially could be reached on the financing negotiations between the Federal Government, the State of Hesse, the city of Frankfurt and the German Federal Railroad no agreement.

On 28 May 1978, the first section was put into operation. The S-Bahn trains of the Taunus Railway (S1 ), the Main- Lahn- Bahn (S2 ), the limit Bahn (S3 ), the Kronberg train (S4 ), the Homburger Bahn (S5 ) and the Main- Weser -Bahn (S6 ) drive since a ramp in the amount of the former postal station by the West in the tunnel on a steep ramp up to 39 parts per thousand and is just under 500 meters Frankfurt (Main ) Hauptbahnhof ( deep). The Main Railway (S14, S8 today ) was included short time later. Up to this point the tunnel was built using an open architecture, where the reception building of the main station was temporarily removed in this area.

From the station, the line was built by mining. Then passes under the railway station district and reached in about 700 meters to Frankfurt (Main) Taunusanlage station. Here, the tunnel turns east and, after about 250 meters on the C- tunnel subway Frankfurt, where he leads together under the Freßgass to Frankfurt train station ( Main) main station.

1983, the City Tunnel has been largely extended in open cut 600 meters to the east of the Zeil up at station. This section also is a joint tunnel of the S -Bahn (center) with the C line metro ( respectively outer ), the southern metro line had to be by mining ascended to a section just before the Konstablerwache because existing superstructure.

From 31 July to 18 August 2006, the 30- year-old tunnel was rehabilitated by at station. In this case, 30 points were exchanged. The costs amounted to 15 million euros.

Branch to the East Railway Station

Between the stations of Frankfurt ( Main) Konstablerwache and Frankfurt ( Main) Ostendstraße was the connection for a branching tunnel to the Frankfurt train station ( Main ) Ost already built, to lead the Nordmainische S -Bahn on Main Valley to Hanau by in the future. As part of the construction of the subway at Ostbahnhof the conditions for the establishment of an S -Bahn tunnels were also created, as that would not have been possible through a planned development later.

Main- under-crossing

The next major phase of construction followed in 1990 continued in a southeasterly direction. Under a block between the Hanauer Landstrasse and Ostendstrasse of Frankfurt (Main) Ostend Street Station was built. The route crosses under 300 meters to the south of the Main. Due to the short distance to the river bed required that tunnel section, a special procedure: First, the pits were dug and then sunk the finished tubes in two halves in the water there.

After the main crossing below divides the Tunnel: A branch runs towards Sachsenhausen, where he is guided below the Sachsenhausen old town of Frankfurt ( Main) Lokalbahnhof reached and then via a ramp on the embankment of the Kinzig valley train to the Frankfurt train station ( Main) Süd. At South Station a change junctions between S -Bahn, regional and mainline services, trams and the A- line subway was built.

The second track section, which was completed in 1992, branches off to the Main undercrossing on the Sachsenhausen side heading east, where it leads to the railway station Frankfurt (Main) Miihlberg. Then the train comes in the area of the former station Frankfurt- Oberrad for about 1.2 km to the surface again before the City Tunnel Offenbach begins where the nearest train station, Offenbach -Kaiserlei already on Offenbach city area.

Toughening up

From September 2009, was replaced in the Frankfurt city tunnel safety techniques, so that the hourly frequency of trains in the tunnel could increase from 22 to 24 trains since 14 June 2010. This made it possible to bind the previously -ending traffic in peak hours in Frankfurt and Offenbach Hauptbahnhof features of S2. In total, 28 additional daily trips are now offered in the tunnel. The exercise cost 8.1 million euros.

Technology

A number of design parameters of the tunnel differs from the provisions of the Railway Construction and Operating Regulations of 1967. So a narrower, flatter profile with reduced contact wire height (4.80 m above the running surface ) was chosen over the clearance rule, which resulted in a track distance of 3.80 m.
