Frans Pourbus the Younger

Frans Pourbus ( the younger), also: Purbis (I) Porbus ( Frkr. ) (* 1569 in Antwerp, † before February 19, 1622 in Paris) was a Dutch painter. found in his oeuvre mainly portraits as miniatures.

Life and work

Pourbus was the son of the painter Frans Pourbus ( the Elder). He received his first art lessons from his father. After the death of his father in 1581 he inherited on Thursday, September 17, 1581 whose drawings and his grandfather Pieter Pourbus was his guardian. 1588 he inherited his grandparents. A year later, in 1586 employed him the restoration of Bernard van Orley winged altar in Notre Dame in Bruges. At age 21, he was accepted into the Guild of St. Luke in 1591. 1592 Fernande Liggeren was his pupil. Before 1600 he was in the service of the Brussels court. He also pointed out a painting for the Brussels governor.

Later he went to Italy, where he became court painter since 1600 the Duke of Mantua. After his time in Mantua, he lived in Innsbruck, Naples, in 1606 in Paris and Turin. Maria d ' Medici appointed him in 1609 as court painter to Paris. In 1610 he settled in Paris, where he. Among the kings Henry IV and Louis XIII a busy artist and was in his time the most famous court painter. From then on he was called Francois Pourbus le Jeune. At the age of around 50 years, the painter Frans Pourbus died ( the younger) in 1622 in Paris. He was buried on Saturday, February 19, 1622.
