Franz Emmerich Kaspar von Waldbott von Bassenheim

Franz Emmerich Kaspar Waldbott of Bassenheim (* 1626 in Lahnstein, † July 11, 1683 in Speyer ) was from 1679 to 1683 Roman Catholic Bishop of Worms.

Life and work

Franz Emmerich Kaspar came from the old noble family of Waldbott of Bassenheim. His father Damian Waldbott of Bassenheim served as Kurtrier bailiff in Lahnstein, the mother's name was Maria Elisa dog of Saulheim.

The young nobles chose the spiritual stand in 1637 he was sworn in as canon in Mainz and was promoted on May 15, 1679 to the Custodian of the Mainz Cathedral. Moreover, he held a canonry at the Abbey of St. Victor in front of Mainz (which was but back then already settled in St. John's in the city); in Speyer, he was Domscholaster to Worms provost.

Franz Kaspar Emmerich died in 1683 during a stay in Speyer. His body has transferred to the Worms Cathedral and buried there in the bishop's crypt under the east choir. The grave was plundered in 1689 by the French.

Family environment

Anton Waldbott of Bassenheim, the uncle of Bishop Franz Emmerich Kaspar ( his father's brother), worked as a choir bishop in the Archdiocese of Trier.

Casimir Ferdinand Adolph Waldbott of Bassenheim (1642-1730), was the nephew of Bishop Franz Emmerich Kaspar ( son of his only brother Johann Lothar ). He was also Chorbishop in Trier and Mainz Domscholaster and brought the famous figure of Bassenheimer rider after Bassenheim, which dates from 1683 demolished rood screen of the Mainz Cathedral.
