Franz Gareis

Franz Gareis ( born June 28, 1775 in Ostritz St. Marienthal, . † May 31, 1803 in Rome ) was a German painter.

At age 16, Franz Gareis went to the Art Academy in Dresden, to inquire about there on the recording conditions. In 1791 it was time that he could begin his studies, he was a pupil there from the Director Giovanni Battista Casanova, a brother of the famous adventurer Giacomo Casanova. Gareis made ​​with paintings and pastel drawings attention. 1794 was finished his studies and he took an educational trip through Brandenburg, Danzig up to Narva and back over Memel, Berlin to Dresden. In 1796 he received a pension of 100 thalers by the elector. From 1798 he emigrated now from Hall (1798 ) to Leipzig (1799 ), Vienna (1799 ), Berlin ( 1800), Paris ( 1801) to Rome (1803 ). On the journey he contracted typhus and died in Rome. He is buried near the Pyramid of Cestius.

Works

His works include an altarpiece in the side villages Church, Mary Magdalene beneath the Cross of 1798, and Orpheus - action before the god of the underworld, which he had sent shortly before his death to the art exhibition in Dresden. The most extensive inventory of his works preserved the Graphic Cabinet Museum of Cultural History Görlitz.

Family

Franz Gareis was not married but engaged to Louise Reichardt (1779-1826), whom he would marry on his return. Louise was the daughter of conductor Johann Friedrich Reichardt.

His brother Gottlieb († November 20, 1859 ) died as a royal chamber musician in Berlin. He was trained by Johann Friedrich Reichardt in Halle.
