Franz Xaver von Hertling

Franz Xaver von Hertling ( born June 28, 1780 in Ladenburg, Electoral Palatinate, † September 13, 1844 in Munich) was a German baron, lieutenant general and Bavarian Minister of War.

Origin

He came from the Palatinate noble family von Hertling and was the son of the Palatine Government Council Jakob Anton von Hertling (1740-1793) and his wife Maria Anna Antonia von Weiler.

The father's brother Johann Friedrich Stephan von Hertling (1729-1806) was the great-grandfather of the later German Chancellor and Minister President of Bavaria Georg von Hertling ( 1843-1919 ).

Life and work

Franz Xaver von Hertling received his training in the cadet corps, joined the Palatinate and Bavarian Army and became a second lieutenant in 1798. In the campaigns of 1800-1815 he was promoted first to lieutenant and finally to colonel, at times acted as adjutant of General Hertling Bernhard Erasmus von Deroy ( 1743-1812 ). 1814 we awarded him for bravery in the Battle of Bar-sur -Aube (27 February 1814) with the Knight 's Cross of the Military Order of Max Joseph Order.

In 1816 he married Maria Anna, Baroness of Kalkhoff, daughter of Anton Moritz by Kalkhoff, real Councilor and secret kingdom clerk at the law firm Reichshof to Vienna.

Hertling was from 1814 to 1824, the first commander of the Bavarian Infantry Guards Regiment, received in 1824 was promoted to major general and brigade commander, in 1836 to lieutenant general and commander of the 4th Bavarian Infantry Division (Würzburg ). As of December 12, 1836 led Franz Xaver von Hertling the business of the Bavarian War Minister, 1837/1838 had the officer officially appointed to the post. He also held the dignity of a Bavarian chamberlains.
