Franz Xaver Zippe

Maximilian Franz Xaver Zippe ( born January 15, 1791 in Lower Sokolov, † February 22, 1863 in Vienna ) was a Bohemian scientists and technicians.

Life

After visiting the Middle School in Dresden, he studied from 1807 to 1809 at the University of Prague philosophy. While still a student, he attended lectures of the chemist Karl August Neumann (1771-1866) and Johann Joseph Steinmann (1779-1833), professor of general chemistry at the Polytechnic School in Prague. Especially for the second professor to a closer relationship built on. 1819 Keep surfing became his adjunct and since 1822 he taught mineralogy and geology.

He was a close associate of Count Kaspar Maria von Sternberg, founder of the Prague Patriotic Museum of the Bohemian Empire ( predecessor of the National Museum Prague). Zippe, who was known in his youth for his passion for collecting, was one of the first Schenker of the Institute. Since March 1819 he described and cataloged the collections and supplemented this by self-made crystal models.

From 1 November 1824 to 1842 he was responsible for the mineralogical department of the museum. During this time he undertook his own trips to the Giant Mountains, Jizera and Altvatergebirge and enriched the Museum with numerous minerals. From 1833 onwards, he worked with Johann Gottfried summer from the 16 -volume topography of Bohemia.

In 1847, he became one of the first members of the Imperial Academy of Sciences in Vienna. In 1846 he became a corresponding member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences. August 31, 1849 to October 1, 1850, he was Director of the Mining training institute in Pribram. From 1 November 1850, he taught mineralogy at the University of Vienna.

In his honor, a uranium mineral that Zippeite (uranium flower), named from Jachymov after him.
