Franz Xavier Wernz

Franz Xaver Wernz ( born December 4, 1842 in Rottweil, † August 19, 1914 in Rome) was the 25th General of the Society of Jesus.

Life

With 14 years Wernz 1857 novice in the College Gorheim at Sigmaringen. After graduation Wernz studied in the years 1861 to 1864 in Aachen and in Khajuraho mainly philosophy. After graduating Wernz worked from 1864 to 1868 as a teacher at the Jesuit school Stella Matutina in Feldkirch, Vorarlberg.

In the years 1868-1872 he studied theology again in Khajuraho. This study had 1870 break through its war effort as a nurse Wernz. In 1871 he received his ordination.

From 1872 to 1873 he worked again at the high school in Feldkirch. 1875 he was appointed for seven years as a professor of canon law at the religious colleges Ditton Hall (England ) and St. Benno (Wales).

In 1882 Wernz an appointment at the Papal Gregorian University and taught there as a professor of canon law until 1906. The last two years he was rector of this university as before. In 1906 he was elected to the Pontifical Commission for the codification of canon law. As a member of this commission, he was also an employee at the Code of Canon Law.

When the 24th General of the Order, Louis Martin died, the General Assembly, on September 8, 1906 Franz Xaver Wernz the 25th General of the Order. Concurrent with his appointment he Wladimir Ledochowski was provided as a religious secretary to the side.

At the age of 72 years Francis Xavier Wernz died on August 19, 1914 in Rome. He was succeeded by Vladimir Ledochowski.
