History

The French Gymnasium Berlin was founded in 1689 for the children of the immigrant at the invitation of the Great Elector Huguenots.

In the 18th century the College was able to respected leaders like Jean Henri Samuel Formey (Director 1737-1739 ) and Jean Pierre Erman ( 1766-1824 ), who sometimes were educators of the Prussian prince, establish a close contact with the Academy of Sciences. Towards the end of this period was the old library of the school, which has been enriched by a legacy of Prince Henry set up. The number of students increased considerably, from 35 in 1766 to 208 in 1809. School building from 1701 to 1873, the palace served in Wangenheim Niederlagstraße on Friedrichswerder close to the French road.

During the period of National Socialism the French school was subject to the same measures as all schools, without entirely losing the climate of tolerance. 1935 and 1942, all Jewish, all so-called " half-Jewish " students of the school were referred here as well. French remained the language of instruction for a certain time were even connections with France - for example in the form of class trips - maintained.

At the end of the war, the school building was destroyed on Reichstagufer. In May 1945, the classes were resumed in Behelfsquartieren. After the war, the French military government created its own school in Berlin. In the wake of the great politics of the time of the Schuman Plan prepared the directors of the two schools, Fouilleron and Hartig, in February 1952, the merger of their facilities before. With the beginning of school year 1952, the French German students joined in the building at Zeppelinplatz in Wedding on; September 22 is considered to be the date of the merger, which became official by the Treaty of 24 April 1953. In the same year classes were added in the new, modern building at Kurt -Schumacher-Damm in the Allied settlement Cité Pasteur.

The history of the following years is the story of a progressive form of merger, for example, with the first simultaneous school year the German and French students in 1973, the alignment of school life up to Bac and high school in 1977 and the expansion of the merger on the last integrated compartments, English and Latin. Since 1974, the Collège français resides in the Derfflingerstraße (Berlin- Tiergarten).
