The term Frat Pack was first used in 1998 by Entertainment Weekly, at the time, however, the designation was the actors Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, Edward Norton and Ryan Phillippe, who were declared as the new generation of Hollywood. Permanently, the term, however, manifested only in June 2004, after the USA Today in an article in relation to the movie Old School - We make absolutely miss a thing (2003) with Luke Wilson, Will Ferrell and Vince Vaughn had used and they soon had been taken up by other media.

The actors of the Frat Pack even stressed on numerous occasions that the group is a pure invention of the media and denied any understandings with respect to the monopolization of the comedy landscape of Hollywood. The only reason for the frequent cooperation was their close friendship private.
