Narrow Ash ( Fraxinus angustifolia)

The Narrow-leaved ash or whorl - Ash ( Fraxinus angustifolia) is a species of the genus of ash trees (Fraxinus ). It is the European ash very similar in appearance and ecology.

Description

The Narrow-leaved Ash is reached a deciduous tree, the plant height of about 20 to 30 meters. The dark gray bark shatters the age by a dense network of fine cracks in rails. The tree crown is leafy and highly irregular and very dense. The thin, short and drooping branches have an olive to olive-brown bark. The buds are dark purple-brown.

The arranged opposite, articulated in petiole and leaf blade leaves are 15-20 cm long and more slender than the Common Ash. The leaf blade is pinnate and consists of seven to 13 slender leaflets. The dark green above, lighter below and leafless leaflets have a length of 3 to 8 cm and a width of 1 to 2 cm.

The Narrow-leaved Ash is Andromonözisch, which means one copy has both inflorescences with male and hermaphrodite flowers with which. It has grape-like flowers and seed heads. The wing nuts (Samara ) are oblong, elliptical in shape and 3-4 cm long.

Occurrence

The Narrow-leaved Ash is native to southern Europe, northern Africa and western Asia. Locality data are available for Portugal, Spain, France (including Corsica), Italy (including Sardinia and Sicily), the former Yugoslavia, Albania, Bulgaria, Greece, Turkey, Syria, northern Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Armenia, Aserbaitschan, Georgia, Turkmenistan and the Crimea. Northernmost natural occurrence is in Austria along the Morava and the Leitha. It occurs mainly in lowland forests. In Central Europe it is hardy and can be seen occasionally in parks. In South Africa and in Australia it is a neophyte.

Use

Some varieties of narrow-leaved ash are used as ornamental plants.

(Also called ' Veltheimii ') The cultivar ' monophylla ' has simple ( ungefiederte ) leaves and thus is similar to the single-leaf ash (Fraxinus excelsior cv. ' Diversifolia ').
