Fred Karlsson

Fred Karlsson ( born February 17, 1946 in Turku ) is a Finnish linguist and professor at the University of Helsinki.

Karlsson grew up in his native city of Turku and completed his school career. Then he studied until 1969 at the Swedish-language Åbo Akademi ( Degree: MA) before moving to the Finnish language University of Turku for his doctorate. Since 1980 he is Professor of General Linguistics at the University of Helsinki.

In the field of computational linguistics Karlsson developed with Constraint Grammar (CG ) is a method for the automated morphological and syntactic analysis of texts. This method is applicable in the individual language.

In addition, he has studied historical linguistics for the area of the Nordic languages.

Although Fred Karlsson belongs to the Swedish speaking minority in Finland, his Finnish Grammar is considered a standard work.
