Frédéric Devreese

Frédéric ( Frederik ) Devreese ( born June 2, 1929 in Amsterdam) is a Belgian composer and conductor. He is son of the famous composer and conductor Godfried Devreese.

Life and career

Devreese, born in 1929 in Amsterdam, was initially trained by his father, who was also director of the Music Conservatory of Mechelen. At the Royal Conservatory in Brussels, he was in the composition class of Marcel Poot and orchestral direction he studied with René Defossez. After his military service he completed his studies at the Conservatory of Amsterdam in the subjects of counterpoint and fugue among others, Ernest Willem Mulder. He went to Rome at the Accademia di Santa Cecilia old and studied there with Ildebrando Pizzetti and Fernando Previtali. He then went to the State Music Academy in Vienna, where he was awarded a degree with Hans Swarovsky in orchestral conducting in 1956.

In 1958 he became the B.R.T., where he realized initially broadcasts the World Exhibition in Brussels. After various transit stations he was ultimately producer and conductor of the Flemish television BRT ( Belgian Radio en Televisie ). From 1965 to 1974 he was also a teacher at the National Institute of Theatre and dissemination of culture in Brussels. As a conductor of several orchestras, including the Belgian Youth Orchestra, and initiator of special television programs he has worked for young musicians.

Devreese has started relatively early to compose. In 1949 he was awarded the prize of the city of Oostende for his first piano concerto. His oeuvre is very versatile, he is involved in numerous film and audio productions.
