Frederick Suppe

Frederick Roy soup ( born February 22, 1940 in Los Angeles, California) is an American philosopher of science. In 2000 he became Professor Emeritus Professor of Philosophy at the University of Maryland, College Park. Immediately after his retirement he moved to the Texas Tech University. Since 2002 he is head of the Department of Classical and Modern Languages ​​and Literatures.

Studies and scientific interests

Since completing his studies in mathematics at the University of California, Riverside ( BA 1962) and the philosophy in Michigan, Ann Arbor, (MA 1964, PhD 1967) taught, and he worked at various prestigious universities.

Have global significance of his scientific work on the philosophy of science (in particular scientific modeling ), epistemology, logic, and history of science. He is a representative of model-theoretic point of view in the philosophy of science. He is best known for his books The Structure of Scientific Theories (1977 ) and The Semantic Conception of Theories and Scientific Realism (1989).

In addition to his interest in philosophy of science and logic, he also works on Philosophical Theology, and Philosophy of gender. Among other things, he taught courses on Gay & Lesbian Philosophy. Most recently, he worked with James A. Yorke at a computer model of the spread of HIV.
