Frederick Yates

Frederick Dewhurst Yates ( born January 16, 1884 in Leeds, † November 10, 1932 in London ) was an English chess player.

Life

He won in 1913, 1914, 1921, 1926, 1928 and 1931 the British Championship. In international tournaments he usually could not place right at the front, but are dangerous in some parts even better players. At the tournament in Hamburg in 1910 Siegbert Tarrasch objected to its admission because he was too weak. Yates was actually Last, but won just the match against Tarrasch. In addition, he succeeded several times in the course of his career, winning against Alexander Alekhine and Akiba Rubinstein. He wrote about chess in several English newspapers.

His best historical Elo rating of 2596, he reached in January 1925.

By carbon monoxide poisoning due to a faulty gas furnace he was tragically killed.
