Freilingen

Freilingen ( dialect: Frälinge ) is a municipality in the Westerwald district in Rhineland- Palatinate. The community belongs to the municipality seltzer (Westerwald ) and is a nationally recognized resort.

Geographical location

Freilingen lies in the Westerwald between Hachenburg in the north, Westerburg in the east, Montabaur in the south and 7 km south-west to seltzer. It is located directly south of the Westerwald Lake, a popular holiday and recreation area to the near post pond ( Freilingen pond ).

Less than 2 km east-southeast of the village stands since 1998 on the Bright Mountain (491 m above sea level. NN ) an observation tower with a view, inter alia, the Westerwald.

History

For the first time Freilingen was mentioned in a document in 1034 as Vriligoim. The place was at an important junction of the High Street with a leading from the Rhine via the High Westerwald Dill connection. Already in 1612 was a post office station of the line Antwerp - Liege - Cologne - Frankfurt, for the place was at about 82 km equidistant from Cologne and Frankfurt. At times, stood here 30 to 40 horses ready for replacement for carriages and dispatch riders. In 1675, Duke Charles of Lorraine here taught here a headquarters of the Imperial troops. Built in 1780 post office building, which was decorated by a carved in red sandstone Postreiter, has been demolished in 1952.

Parish council

The local council in Freilingen consists of twelve council members, who were elected at the municipal election held on 7 June 2009 by majority vote, and the honorary mayor as chairman. In March 2011, Thomas Kloft was elected to succeed the late local Mayor Gudrun Eichelhardt.
