French West Flemish ( frz-wfläm. Fransch Vlaemsch, ndl. Frans - Vlaams, French flamand français) are collective terms for various West-Flemish dialects which are spoken in the area of present-day France.

In the older German literature, this Flemish dialects have been summed up under the names Westhoekflämisch ( frz-wfläm. Westhoek Vlaemsch ) and Südflämisch.

History

Flemish dialects are spoken in the area of the French Netherlands since time immemorial. Today still speak 80000-120000 people in the region who describe themselves as Flemish, the so-called Westhoekflämische. However, there is no common language, but the dialects of Westhoek directly adjoin the neighboring Belgian West Flemish dialects.

In the French Flemings since 1853, the school system is purely French-speaking and the use of Dutch banned there since 1880.
