The Pourquoi Pas? ( German: Why not? ) is a research vessel that was built in Saint- Nazaire by Alstom for the French marine research institute Ifremer and the French Navy.

It is at the service of the Institute Genavir. Bears his name in honor of the ship commander Jean -Baptiste Charcot. The Pourquoi Pas? is used for 55 % of Ifremer and 45 % of the Navy, namely about 150 days a year for the Navy and 180 days for Ifremer.

Equipment

The ship can be used for tasks in the field of hydrography, the deep-sea and coastal fishing, the geosciences, for physical, chemical and biological oceanography of the operations and the implementation of the scientific objectives of the Institute. Equipped it will either be with the deep-sea submarine Nautile, the remote-controlled ROV Victor 6000 or by towing equipment. To charter it is available as well.

A 22 -ton crane enables the handling of heavy equipment. At the bow there is a helipad. With a maximum crew of 40 men, the Pourquoi Pas can? Spend 60 days at a time at sea.

Use

On June 3, 2009, the Pourquoi Pas? to the crash site of Air France flight 447 sent, the - still undiscovered at this time, until 6 June first bodies and parts were located - was near the uninhabited island group St. Peter and St. Paul's Rocks. There they should recover the "black box" of the crashed Airbus A330 -200. The on-board equipment of the ship, especially the deep-sea submarine and the ROV, allow the examination of up to 97 % of the seabed in up to 6,000 meters deep.

Homonyms

There were five other ships that the name Pourquoi -Pas? contributed. Four belonged to the French polar explorer Jean -Baptiste Charcot (1867-1936):

  • Pourquoi -Pas? (1893 ), a cutter was built by Charcot in 1893 and in 1894 took a two-week expedition, this was sold in 1896 and the Pourquoi Pas? II bought.
  • Pourquoi -Pas? (1908 ), the best known of the four ships, plus a three-masted steam engine.
